In memory of Kyree Cohen In April 2004, Kyree Cohen, a 17 year old student at Overbrook High School, was gunned down on the street. Kyree became the 26th student to have been killed that school year in Philadelphia. This crime mobilized the community residents, businesses, and organizations in West Philadelphia and beyond. On April 10, 10,000 people joined the March to Save the Children. In response, the House of Umoja launched a community outreach program, "Peace In The Hood," aimed at persuading Philadelphia public school students high school students to commit to non-violence. The murder rate continued to rise. In 2007, 392 people died by homicide in Philadelphia. Ten men and one woman were killed on or near Lancaster Avenue. |
